Easy French Toast

Browned and crisp on the outside and soft and custard-like in the middle this easy French toast is a real crowd pleaser. It is also one of my favorite breakfast meals. Or anytime-of-the-day meals for that matter.

It is so easy to make it just requires a frying pan, a plate and a spatula. This is a fast weekend treat that uses just a few ingredients that you probably have on hand already.

My french toast recipe is very nutritious too. Starting with whole wheat bread and adding eggs this is high in fiber and protein. This will give you energy and keep you filled up for the rest of the day.

The trick to getting the outside nice and crispy is to make sure that your pan is nice and hot before you begin. Warming up your frying pan for about 5 minutes over medium heat should do the trick. Then turn it down a little bit to low-medium when you add the toast. I recommend a cast iron skillet for the best flavor.

You don’t want your pan to be too hot though. If the oil starts steaming and burning then take it off the burner and let it cool for a few minutes.

Ingredients

To make this scrumptious homemade French toast you will need:

  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Whole wheat bread
  • Olive Oil for frying
  • Maple Syrup for serving

You can easily substitute the milk for water or your favorite milk substitute, as needed.

For a higher protein option double the number of eggs. Use one whole egg for each slice of bread.

While butter and maple syrup are the traditional toppings French toast is also fantastic with natural apple sauce, blueberries, strawberries, peaches or other fresh fruit. Whipped cream is a delicious companion as well.

Storing and Reheating

I recommend eating this while it is how and fresh. However if you do have any leftovers you can store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

To reheat, simply place the French toast in a toaster for several minutes until warmed through. Then butter and top with syrup or other toppings and enjoy.

Directions

To make my Easy French Toast simply warm a frying pan up over medium to low heat. Then add about 1 teaspoon of oil to pan.

Crack one egg onto a plate and add 2 Tb. milk. Beat it together with a fork. Then dip a slice of bread in your egg mixture and flip it over using the fork to coat both sides of bread. Place in the pan. Cook on each side for about 3 - 4 minutes.

Dip a second slice of bread in the egg mixture, coating each side. Cook on both sides. You are coating 2 slices of bread with 1 egg plus 2 Tb. of milk. Or about one half and egg per each slice of bread.

Add more oil to pan as needed and repeat with remaining bread.

For a high protein option just use one whole egg for each slice of bread. Once the bread is soaked in egg on both sides, place bread in pan and pour the remaining egg mixture on top, cooking as usual.

Quick, easy and delicious French toast. I always thought French toast was hard to make but this is simple and is a great recipe. I like the extra protein option.
