This is the perfect recipe for Valentine’s Day, a wedding, a birthday, an anniversary, a romantic date, a homemade gift, or just a special treat.

Making chocolate-covered strawberries is surprisingly easy. They only take about 20 minutes to melt the chocolate and dip the berries.

In addition, they are beautifully amazing to look at and are healthy for you too!

Ingredients

This recipe is so simple that it only has two ingredients: chocolate and strawberries.

Chocolate

  • Start with very good chocolate. I recommend using high-quality chocolate chips.
  • Use 1 package (11.5 ounces).
  • These can be found in the baking aisle. You can select your favorite type of chocolate: milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or even semi-sweet.
  • If you don’t have high-quality chocolate chips you could use couverture chocolate. Sometimes it is also called covering, dipping, or candy melts chocolate.
  • These often have added cocoa butter which can help them melt better. However, couverture chocolate often has fillers and is made with lower-quality ingredients.
  • Some types of candy bars might work but because of fillers and various ingredients sometimes they can be hard to melt into creamy dippable chocolate. For the best results avoid using candy bar chocolate.

Strawberries

  • Use 1 pound of fresh strawberries.
  • Select strawberries that are fresh with nice green stems that are firmly attached. Don’t choose berries that are overripe or have wet or mushy spots on them because the chocolate won’t stick.

Toppings

Toppings are optional but delicious and help customize your strawberries to exactly how you like them. Here are some ideas:

  • Chopped nuts
  • Shredded Coconut
  • Sprinkles
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Graham Cracker crumbs
  • Crushed Oreo Cookies
  • Crushed Candy canes
  • Melted white or dark chocolate

Melt chocolate in double boiler
  • Allow your strawberries to come to room temperature. Then wash and completely dry them.
  • Fill a small pot with about 1 inch of water then place a heat-proof bowl or pan over the top. This creates a double boiler.
  • Heat over medium heat.
  • Set ¼ cup of chocolate chips aside later to temper the chocolate.
  • Place the remaining chocolate chips into the top bowl of your double boiler, stirring frequently.
  • When the chocolate is melted, remove the pot from the heat. Carefully remove the bowl from the double boiler, making sure not to get any steam or drops of water into your chocolate.
  • Temper your chocolate by adding the remaining chocolate chips. Mix and let them melt with the heat of the chocolate without adding any additional heat.

Dip strawberries in chocolate
  • Stir until the chocolate is smooth.
  • Dip your strawberries in melted chocolate. Shake gently to remove the excess and then place on a silicon baking liner, parchment paper, or waxed paper.
  • If the chocolate starts to harden before you are done dipping all the berries, place it over the double boiler again. Sometimes the hot water will be enough to keep the chocolate liquid or place it on the stove on medium heat.
  • Optional: sprinkle on any toppings you desire such as chopped nuts, coconut flakes, or sprinkles, or come up with your own.
  • Allow the chocolate to set up completely before you enjoy them. This may take 30 to 60 minutes or more depending on your room’s temperature.

Substitutions

Vegan Chocolate chips can easily be substituted instead or regular chocolate chips.

If strawberries are not your thing, many other fruits can be dipped in chocolate instead. Here are a few ideas:

  • Orange or Mandarin segments
  • Bananas
  • Raspberries
  • Grapes
  • Apple Slices
  • Pineapple

Non-chocolate option

For a healthy, non-chocolate option, try dipping them in coconut butter. Use ½ cup of melted coconut butter and one pound of chilled strawberries.

There is no need to temper the coconut butter. Simply melt in a small bowl over hot water.

Then coat the cold strawberries in coconut butter and add a topping if you want. Store any extras in the refrigerator.

Storing & Freezing

Enjoy these within 1 - 2 days. Leave them at room temperature if possible, uncovered or with just a loose covering.

An air-tight container will trap moisture and make the strawberries sweat and separate from the chocolate.

If your weather or room temperature is too hot you can put them in the fridge. However, refrigerating them may cause bloom to develop.

Bloom is that hazy white covering on chocolate after it has been refrigerated, it does not affect the flavor but alters the smooth luxurious look of the chocolate.

You can freeze dipped strawberries. Remove the stem and store it in the freezer for up to 3 months. Eat frozen (a great treat when it is hot!) or defrost for about an hour at room temperature then eat right away.

How to Serve

They are a perfect ending for almost any meal. Serve on their own or next to cake or ice cream.

These berries will brighten up any brunch or buffet in a heartbeat. Bring them along to your next party or gathering.

They also make a fabulous homemade gift. Who wouldn’t love to receive a box of these beautiful hand-dipped confections?

Finish off your next romantic dinner with some of these luscious juicy treats. Crack open a bottle of Champagne and savor these amazing bite-sized desserts.

Tips

Insert a toothpick into the top of the berry and use it to help hold the berry while you dip.

If you have extra melted chocolate when you are done you can dip other goodies you have on hand such as pretzels, graham crackers, or orange slices.

Or pour it on your parchment and let it cool. Then chop it up to use in chocolate chip cookies later.
